Breaking Barriers in Engineering

Randi Karpinia’s journey has been far from conventional. She earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, where she was one of just three women in her program, and later completed a Master’s in Engineering at Florida Atlantic University. Randi began her career as an electrical engineer at Motorola Inc. (later Motorola Solutions Inc.), where her innovative problem-solving skills and natural talent for mentoring quickly distinguished her as a standout professional.

She quickly excelled in her career, earning fast-track promotions to top leadership positions - an impressive feat as one of the few women in engineering at the time. Her early accomplishments were groundbreaking, including developing the first wristwatch pager, leading Motorola's paging research and development team in Japan, and overseeing the paging infrastructure division for Southeast Asia during her time in Singapore.

From Engineering to Intellectual Property Law

During her time at Motorola, Randi held various engineering and leadership roles overseas. Upon returning to the U.S., she felt inspired to take her career in a new direction and decided to pursue patent law to create an even greater impact. She attended Nova Southeastern University Law School, approaching this new challenge with the same determination that defined her engineering career—all while working full-time and raising two children. After earning her law degree, Randi became a highly respected leader in intellectual property law at Motorola. It was during this phase of her career that she developed a passion and expertise for protecting software innovations through the patent process, with a particular focus on AI-related technologies.

In 2018, Randi's husband, David, tragically and unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack. In an instant, Randi became a widow, a single mother to a pre-teen, and the owner of Sagacity Legal, the law firm David had built.

Resilience and Reinvention at Sagacity

David’s passing marked a pivotal moment in Randi’s life. She made the bold decision to leave behind her long and successful corporate career to take over Sagacity Legal, transforming its focus to align with her passion and expertise: intellectual property law. What started as a practical step to make ends meet quickly grew into a flourishing practice. Along the way, Randi connected with a community of entrepreneurs who greatly needed her skills, and she has since dedicated herself wholeheartedly to supporting their success.

Throughout her career, Randi has consistently broken barriers and achieved success, from Engineering to IP Law. Her journey is a testament to her resilience, drive, expertise and unwavering commitment to protecting innovation.

Beyond the Bar

When I’m not safeguarding intellectual property, I’m out in the world connecting, mentoring, and exploring.

My commitment to community extends deeply into causes that touch the heart. Each year, I channel my energy into the Heart Walk, leading David’s Team to honor the memory of my late husband, David. We step forward together to ensure future generations can keep their loved ones close. I am also dedicated to serving as a Board Member for Pandora’s Kids, an incredible organization that provides a safe, supportive community for children and teens who have lost a parent or sibling.

Mentoring has always been a passion of mine, and I believe in empowering the next generation of legal minds. From leading the AIPLA Mentoring Committee in past years to currently serving as a Florida Bar Mentor, I am committed to passing the torch. I also informally mentor many women in the IP field, helping them navigate their careers and achieve their own strategic goals. These roles constantly remind me that success is measured not just by what we build, but by who we lift up along the way.

Creating a Collaborative Community: As a Group Leader for ProVisors, I am part of a premier national networking organization exclusively for Trusted Advisors. It’s a community built on a “Know, Like, Trust, Refer” culture, where we forge deep relationships to help professionals drive their visions forward and create an ecosystem of support for businesses like yours.

Fueling the Creative Journey – To bring fresh, innovative perspectives to your brand, I keep my own horizons broad. Traveling is how I recharge and discover new ways of thinking. Experiencing how different cultures solve problems helps me bring creative, scalable solutions back to your legal strategy.

Grounding Moments – When the suitcase is unpacked, you will find me spending quality time with family and friends, and at home with Sagacity’s unique assistant, Sphinxie the bird. This balance keeps me sharp, focused, and ready to help empower you and your brand to reach new heights.
