The phone rings…
WOW – caller ID says it’s the USPTO.
The USPTO is calling?
Must be about that trademark your attorney filed for you.
COOL!
But wait a minute, a little voice in your head says (is it my voice?)…
Didn’t my attorney tell me that the USPTO would never contact me directly?
Something about all correspondence coming through the law firm?
BUT IT’S THE USPTO!
So you pick it up and say “hello”.
The caller identifies himself as from the Trademark office.
Says he needs to verify information on the application with the owner.
But shouldn’t you speak with my attorney?
No, it needs to be the owner, he replies..
HANG UP! IT’S SCAMMERS!
Scammers have recently started calling trademark customers and falsely claiming to be an employee with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
They are pretending to be employees from the USPTO in order to steal money and personal information!
These con-artists use a technique called “spoofing,” which makes it appear as if they’re calling from an official source.
Stay safe from scammers by never giving out personal or payment information over the phone.
If you get a suspicious call, remember that the USPTO will never ask for those details over the phone – so hang up and protect yourself!
