All my life I’ve been told to “dress for success.”  Inevitably that meant dressing with a sense of style and professionalism:  impeccable hair, nails, shoes, and of course, let’s not forget the professional dress or pantsuit.   

I do agree that your image and appearance makes an impression on others.  That’s basically proven. However, lately I’ve been thinking about what “dress for success” means for my own personal day to day success.  For example, some say that dressing to impress yourself each and every day will make you more productive, more successful.

Hmmm, I wonder…..

You see, as an entrepreneur and a sole practitioner, the role I play each day varies. 

Some days I’m a business owner managing my operations.

Alternatively, on other days, I’m a lawyer advising a small business. 

Further, on other days I’m a life coach providing guidance to a client.

Lastly, sometimes I’m a creator writing content for my blog.   

For each of those roles, a different “me” emerges.  Specifically, for each of those roles, a different image defines “dress for success”.  You say: “Is that really true?”

For me, my appearance definitely impacts my thoughts, feelings, and actions on any given day. 

Take this week for example. Yesterday, I was the successful business person. I had a number of face-to-face meetings, I dressed the part.  Yes, impeccable hair, make-up, even the designer purse. I felt and portrayed confidence, intelligence, and leadership; and those around me quickly got the same impression.   They truly believed I could make a difference to their organization.

What about today?  Today I am a creator.  I am writing content for my new website and my blog.  Furthermore, it’s a perfect day for this too: dreary, rainy, no in-person meetings.  I got up early, enthusiastic and ready to go: t-shirt, yoga pants, pony tail, no make-up.  I feel good. I feel creative. The words have been flowing since sunrise and all is right in the world. Very different “dress” – very different definition of “success.”

Indeed, I completely adhere to the concept of “dress for success”, but not in the traditional definition. 

To summarize: Dress for success of the role you are playing today – that’s where true transformative impact happens!
