“Today is a gift, yesterday is a memory and tomorrow is a promise” – Patrick Chery
My Personal Growth Role Model
My mom recently celebrated her 83rd birthday. More importantly, she literally just sold her business and talks about retiring later this year. She tells me she’s old and tired. Specifically, she tells me her life was just “ordinary.” I say no to all of those statements – my mom is my entrepreneurial hero. She’s a role model for all of us small business owners.
You see, my mom has been a business owner all her life. For many years, with my stepfather. Further, for the past 21 years since she became a widow, running a business on her own. Recently, in the past few years, along with her best friend. Furthermore, her businesses have thrived with the ups and downs of the economy; always leaving a lasting mark of positivity on her clients.
As I grow my own business, my mom is my confidante, mentor, and overall motivator.
Specifically, she has taught me how to live life to the fullest, while being a successful business owner. She travels often, takes time for self-care every week, and yes, even walks miles each day.
It’s my goal to “walk a mile in her shoes.”
My Journey
When I think back over the 33 years since I became a mother, since my first child was born, it’s been an amazing journey. I raised three children, divorced, remarried, earned a Masters in Engineering as well as a Law Degree, succeeded in both an Engineering Management and a Legal Career, inspired others both personally and professionally, lived overseas, travelled the world, and in general lived each day to its fullest. With all the ups and downs, I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
My Personal Growth
In 2018, my life took a huge detour. My husband passed away suddenly; and I inherited his law firm. Instead of giving up, I made the decision to create a new and lasting legacy.
Instead of letting these drastic changes stop me, I decided it was time for a new phase in my life.
You see, I knew that with two biological parents in their mid-eighties, it’s possible that I have 30+ adult years yet to experience. My future can be as fulfilling and amazing as the past 30+ adult years were.
In just the past year and a half since I became a widow and a law firm owner, my son has married, my daughter engaged, and my youngest started high school. I retired from my corporate job and recreated Sagacity Legal as a law firm focused on helping small businesses and entrepreneurs. Interestingly, I became a Certified Widow Coach, a Board member of a non-profit, and a member of one of our state bar’s certification committees. I even renovated my bathroom and bedroom. Let me mention: I did all of this while nursing a torn tendon in my foot and 6 months of immobilization!
Who knows what the next 30 years will bring? How I will leave my own mark on this world.
